Website Title: Gigniks: Tech Evangelist (Microsoft)
Description: An interview with a Tech Evangelist. WHAT YOU DO: A technology evangelist gets people excited about your company's products by presenting information about its newest and most cutting edge technologies via demonstrations and hackathons (app-building contests/challenges), as well as videos, live stream webinars, Twitter, articles, and social media. A tech evangelist also teaches professional developers, students and others how develop apps using your company's technologies. EDUCATION: College degree in computer science/engineering, internship experience in the software industry. USEFUL SKILLS: Presentation and teaching skills, people skills, networking skills, ability to travel, flexibility, tech savvy. HOW TO GET IN: In school, impress professionals with your coding and presentation skills. Research internship opportunities in the software industry (they don't have to be specifically related to technical evangelism). CAREER PATH: Take computer science classes. Once you find an internship, work to improve your coding and presentation skills, then network with other technical evangelists. Figure out what type of technology excites you and devote your time to projects you find interesting, like developing an app or a game. Grab every opportunity you can to speak in front of an audience, and you'll get noticed. PAYBACK: Average salary for tech evangelists at big technology companies is around $110,000, and gets higher with experience. DOWNSIDES: Tech evangelists are always moving around to meet with different people and groups, which means that they spend a lot of time away from home and don't have many weekends or evenings free. FUTURE OF JOB: Way above average. As technologies becomes a bigger part of our lives, the industry will need more people to spread the word and get people excited about developing new ones. People with coding skills and the ability to put on a good presentation, will definitely be able to find jobs in this area. NETWORKING: Talk to tech evangelists about technology that excites you, participate in public hackathons and student coding competitions (like Imagine Cup) and attend technology conferences.
